Our History
McKinney Street Baptist Church began as a mission of First Baptist Church--Denton in 1946. The mission became a constituted church on April 4, 1948, as College View Baptist Church because of its proximity to Texas Woman’s University, which at that time was known as Texas State College for Women.
College View Baptist Church was located on Ruddell Street. The church grew over a period of 38 years at that location, having many pastors and building the facilities that still remain today. Rev. Billy Johnson became the pastor of College View Baptist Church in 1983 and led the relocation to its present location and renaming of the church to McKinney Street Baptist Church (MSBC) in 1986. Rev. Johnson continued as pastor until July of 1988. MSBC held its first service on the last day of December in 1986. The facilities on Ruddell Street became a Hispanic mission under the leadership of Pastor Lance Johnson. Lance is the pastor there today. The mission constituted as a church in 1994.
In June of 1997 MSBC completed the present education building under the leadership of Pastor Bill Black who came to be pastor in March of 1994. Pastor Black continues as the pastor today. In 2000 the present worship center was completed with a seating capacity of over 500. At that time, the original worship center became the youth facility. In 2003 the church decided to remove the portable buildings to make room for a 10,000 sq. ft. children’s facility which was completed in April 2009.
MSBC has seen the growth of Denton contribute to its growth over the last 16 years. Denton continues to grow and so does MSBC. The church is located on 10 acres. There is a vision and master plan to develop on the entire acreage and to build a worship center with a 1000+ seat capacity.
Welcome to MSBC.
